US President Donald Trump expressed on Friday that the high tariffs imposed on Chinese goods would not be sustainable in the long run, signaling a possible change in relations ahead of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In an interview with Fox Business, Trump stated regarding the high taxes implemented at the beginning of this year between the two countries, "This is not sustainable," and added, "But they forced me into it."
The customs duty dispute between Washington and Beijing raised US tariffs on Chinese goods by up to 145%. However, these tariffs were postponed with a 90-day truce that will last until November 10.
The aim of the truce was to give the US and China time to resolve broader disputes regarding trade. However, Washington's expansion of technology restrictions and Beijing's tightening of export controls have hindered the progress of these efforts.
Last week, Trump threatened to impose a 100% additional customs duty on Chinese goods by November 1 and raised the idea of canceling the meeting with Xi at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit to be held in South Korea.
Trump commented on Xi, "I get along very well with him. I think we will get along well with China, but we need a fair agreement. It has to be fair."
