Historical Peace Agreement Between Thailand and Cambodia

Thailand and Cambodia signed a peace agreement to end the border clashes that occurred in July, during a ceremony attended by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Signing Ceremony at ASEAN Summit

The signing ceremony held during the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur was attended by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Details of the Agreement

According to the signed agreement, Thailand will release Cambodian prisoners, while Cambodia will begin withdrawing heavy weapons from the border region. Observers from other countries in the region have been tasked with monitoring the implementation of this agreement.

Trump Emphasizes: Good Neighborly Relations

In his speech at the ceremony, Trump stated that this agreement, referred to as the "Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement," demonstrates both countries' commitment to ending hostilities and developing good neighborly relations.

Cambodia's Commitment and Statements from the Thai Prime Minister

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet thanked Trump and expressed their commitment to the agreement, while Thai Prime Minister Charnvirakul declared that this agreement lays the foundations for lasting peace.

New Trade Agreements and Asia Tour

Following the ceasefire ceremony, Trump signed a trade agreement with Cambodia and a cooperation agreement with Thailand in critical minerals. During his five-day Asia tour, Trump visited Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea.

Background of the Border Crisis

The long-standing territorial disputes along the 817-kilometer border between Thailand and Cambodia led to brief clashes on May 28. The armies of both countries had reached an understanding regarding the peaceful resolution of the issue. However, renewed clashes on July 24 resulted in a total of 32 fatalities.

Malaysia's Mediation

Following the escalation, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and the then Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Phumtham Wechayachai met under Malaysia's mediation and agreed on an urgent and unconditional ceasefire. However, Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Cambodia of conducting border attacks, which Cambodia denied.
