The French government described U.S. President Donald Trump's statements regarding imposing a 200% tariff on French goods if French President Emmanuel Macron does not participate in the "Peace Council" for Gaza as "blackmail."
French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard stated in an interview with TF1 that Trump's threat to impose a 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes is "unacceptable." Genevard remarked, "Such harsh threats have never been seen before."
Genevard expressed that this threat targets the struggling wine sector, stating, "Using tariffs as an economic weapon for political purposes is clearly coercion." She also emphasized that this is a situation that the European Union (EU) cannot remain indifferent to.
According to a report by Le Monde, sources close to Macron indicated that Trump's statements are "unacceptable" for France. The same sources stated, "Tax threats aimed at influencing our foreign policy are ineffective."
Trump had requested Macron’s participation in the Peace Council as part of the ceasefire process in Gaza. However, it has been suggested that Macron is not inclined to accept this offer.
Trump stated, "I will impose a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes, but he doesn’t have to participate." He also shared a screenshot of a message from Macron on his Truth Social account.
