The President of the United States, Donald Trump, made a statement via social media, claiming that Cuba has been dependent on large amounts of oil and money from Venezuela for many years.
Trump argued that Cuba has provided security services to Venezuela in exchange for the aid it received, but he claimed that this situation has come to an end, stating, "Most of those Cubans were killed in the US attack last week."
President Trump emphasized that Venezuelans no longer need the 'Cuban' protection, saying, "Venezuela now has the protection of the United States, the strongest army in the world. We will protect them. No more oil or money will go to Cuba. I strongly urge them to make a deal with Cuba before it's too late," he said.
In the capital of Venezuela, Caracas, explosions and sounds of aircraft were heard around 2:00 AM local time on January 3. The Venezuelan government accused the US of carrying out attacks on civilian and military facilities in various regions of the country.
Trump stated that a large-scale operation has been conducted against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and noted that Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores have been taken out of the country.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that charges have been filed against Maduro and his wife in the US, while he has been accused of "drug terrorism, cocaine trafficking, and possession of weapons." The Venezuelan government called on the international community to condemn the US actions.
Simultaneously with the US airstrikes and the abduction of Maduro, his deputy Delcy Rodriguez was sworn in as Acting President on January 5 in the National Assembly. Rodriguez stated, "I am here with great sadness over the kidnapping of our two heroes held captive in the US, our President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores."
