Former US President Donald Trump announced that he will file a lawsuit seeking between 1 to 5 billion dollars in damages next week for BBC's alleged editing of his speeches.
Trump claimed during statements made to reporters while traveling from Washington to Florida that his speeches prior to the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot were distorted. Trump stated, "As you can imagine, the people of England are very angry about what happened because this shows that the BBC's news is fake. We have known this for a long time, but we didn't know it was this fake."
In the BBC News program Panorama, aired on October 28, 2024, a documentary titled "Trump: A Second Chance?" presented two different speeches by Trump before the Capitol riot as if they were a single speech. This editing created the impression that Trump was sending a message to his supporters to "march on Congress and fight." The peaceful protest language from the actual speeches was omitted.
Following the incident, a 19-page report presented to the BBC Board of Directors proved the existence of the editing. As a result of this development, BBC Director General Tim Davie and Director of News Deborah Turness resigned.
US media reported that Trump's lawyers plan to file a 1 billion dollar lawsuit against the BBC. Additionally, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer commented on the editing scandal, stating, "Everyone needs to sweep in front of their own door where mistakes have been made."
