US President Donald Trump is reported to be planning to attend the Davos Summit scheduled for January 2024. According to sources, Trump is considering traveling to Switzerland with a large delegation.
After taking office, Trump had connected to the summit held in January 2021 via video conference. Now, however, the claim that he wants to participate in person is gaining strength.
An unnamed White House official stated that there are expectations for Trump's return to the global forum, but travel plans have yet to be finalized.
Trump's participation in this summit presents an opportunity for the Swiss government to reshape its relations with the White House. Furthermore, Swiss Confederation President Keller-Sutter was unable to sign a trade agreement with her US counterpart this year. Trump had decided to impose a 39% customs duty on Swiss exports.
The successful implementation of the 39% customs duties has been in effect since August 2023. Swiss officials have been continuing negotiations since that date. Trade relations between the two countries have shown improvement recently, and discussions aimed at reducing tariffs will take place during the visit of the Swiss Minister of Economy to Washington.
