Samsung Electronics announced that it is in "close" discussions with Nvidia to supply next-generation artificial intelligence chips. The South Korean tech giant's move is said to be aimed at increasing its competitiveness in the AI chip race against its rivals.

New high-bandwidth memory chips - or HBM4 - are emerging as a key building block of AI infrastructure. Samsung plans to market its new chips next year, although it has not yet disclosed a shipping date.

Local competitor SK Hynix reported that it will start shipping HBM4 chips in the fourth quarter as Nvidia's main HBM chip supplier and aims to increase sales next year. Nvidia confirmed a "main supply partnership" with Samsung but did not provide details.

Additionally, Samsung announced that it will purchase 50,000 high-quality chips from Nvidia to establish an AI-supported semiconductor factory. This new factory aims to increase production speed and efficiency. Samsung's shares rose approximately 4.3% following these announcements.
