Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mariya Zakharova made significant statements regarding the summit planned between the United States and Hungary. Zakharova noted that this summit would be based on the outcomes of the previous Alaska summit. Speaking at a weekly press conference held in Moscow, Zakharova stated, "The dialogue with the US administration continues, but not at the desired pace," she said.
Zakharova emphasized that important steps have been taken to ensure ongoing communication between Russia and the US and reminded that a telephone conversation took place last October between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. However, she also added that no further contacts occurred after this conversation.
Zakharova stated, "The foreign ministers of the two countries understood the necessity of regular communication. This is vital for discussing the Ukraine issue and bilateral matters," she said. Furthermore, she indicated that there is a request for a new summit between Russia and the US: "We are ready for a summit in Budapest, provided that we adhere to the outcomes of the Alaska summit."
Zakharova assessed the US's military actions in Latin America, emphasizing that the attacks on Venezuela should be questioned on a legal basis. "The US has launched an unprecedented military operation in the region under the pretext of fighting drug trafficking," she stated.
The Russian Foreign Ministry opposed such international interventions being used as a pressure tool against sovereign states and emphasized that drug trafficking issues should only be addressed within the framework of international law. Zakharova asserted, "Interference in domestic affairs should not be justified on the grounds of combating drugs," claiming that military actions in the region pose a threat.
