Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the realization of a potential summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump depends entirely on the United States. Lavrov said, "We are ready to proceed at a pace comfortable for the Americans."
Lavrov noted that the summit could take place in the capital of Hungary, Budapest. He emphasized that Trump's proposal has been accepted by Putin and that they are awaiting the details of the meeting to be clarified. He also recalled that Trump announced the cancellation of this invitation on October 23 at the White House.
In a phone conversation with his American counterpart Marco Rubio, Lavrov confirmed that Russia remains committed to the agreements made during the previous Alaska summit between Putin and Trump. "Rubio did not speak about new talks or negotiations. We are ready to proceed at a pace comfortable for the Americans," he said.
Lavrov stated that the territorial issues in Ukraine have been discussed in various formats, mentioning that Putin has addressed this issue with Trump, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and other leaders. "For us, it is not about the lands but about the people living on those lands," Lavrov said, indicating that the ceasefire is an effort to buy time.
Sergey Lavrov emphasized that Ukraine should remain neutral and should not join NATO. He also argued that Finland's NATO membership is a "mistake."
