Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has started taking strict measures in response to the recent increase in avian flu cases. To prevent the spread of the H5N1 virus observed in the country, a requirement has been introduced to keep all farmed poultry in enclosed areas, strengthening animal health protection measures.
In this context, especially considering the number of birds on farms, a ban has been placed on the free movement of animals in gardens or open areas. This decision was made to protect both the sustainability of the agricultural sector and the public health from being jeopardized. The Ministry of Agriculture hopes that these measures will reduce the number of avian flu cases in the long term.
Alongside Spain, other European countries have also entered a state of alert due to similar situations. Emergency action plans have been developed to minimize the effects of this disease, which governments are closely monitoring. In high-risk areas, agricultural experts and animal health specialists are increasing their observations to analyze potential risks in a mosaic manner.
Additionally, with this new implementation, the transportation of poultry to markets for sales or their use in cultural events has also been prohibited, which is seen as an important decision to protect public health. Thus, this step taken to prevent the spread of avian flu is of critical importance in preventing potential outbreaks.
Spanish authorities state that the measures taken will not only be temporary but will also be implemented within a permanent security policy framework. Regular inspections will be carried out to monitor the keeping of poultry in enclosed areas on all farms, and communication with farmers will be maintained. Veterinary teams will increase their visits to farms to take protective measures.
