In Konya's Çumra district, the first experimental planting was carried out in 2022, and the industrial hemp harvest has begun. The President of the Çumra Anatolian Production and Marketing Cooperative, Mahmut Şenyüz, announced that this year's plantings yielded fruitful results and emphasized that hemp provides high yields in Çumra's soils.
Şenyüz stated that farmers' concerns such as "Will it grow? Is there a market? Will it be profitable?" have faded away with the high yields and increasing demand. He expressed that our farmers have applied to their cooperatives to obtain the necessary planting permits.
Drawing attention to the water crisis experienced across the country, Şenyüz explained that hemp contributes to water conservation and requires less irrigation compared to other crops. Hemp can potentially eliminate the need for irrigation during the rainy season; it grows with less water than crops like wheat and barley while providing high yields.
Prof. Dr. Zeki Bayramoğlu, Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics at Selçuk University Faculty of Agriculture, stated that the Konya Plain is one of the world's significant agricultural plains. He expressed that hemp has the potential to provide high income with 3-4 irrigations, emphasizing the importance of supporting and increasing incentives for this production. These steps will not only contribute to the income of farmers but also significantly support rural development.
