Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused US Senator Bernie Moreno of causing tension between the two countries. At a press conference held at the Casa de Nariño Presidential Palace in Bogotá, Petro claimed that Moreno was trying to create conflict by interfering in the relations between the Colombian government and US President Donald Trump.
In his statement, Petro emphasized Moreno's role by saying, "This is my call to 'I accuse.' Everyone will know why Trump was provoked against us by US Senator Bernie Moreno." He also underscored that the Colombian government's operations against drug traffickers should be recognized internationally, stating that this had disturbed some US politicians.
US President Donald Trump accused Colombia of drug production and poisoning families around the world by selling these products. Trump criticized Colombia, labeling it as "out of control", and described Petro as the "worst president", stating "He is a lunatic with many problems and no sane mind."
Trump had previously branded Petro as a "illegal drug leader" and indicated that financial aid to Colombia would be halted. He argued that Petro encouraged drug production nationwide, claiming that it had become "the country's biggest business." Additionally, Trump warned that if drug fields were not closed, the measures the US would take would not be "gentle."
President Petro responded to Trump’s accusations by stating, "Trump is being deceived by the groups and advisors around him." The US's decision to remove Colombia from the "certified countries" list after deeming it unsuccessful in combating drugs in September is only the beginning of this tension.
