JD Vance: 'We Must Open the Government'

After a roundtable meeting at the White House with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy and representatives from the airline industry, JD Vance brought up his expectations from the government.

Impacts of Government Shutdown

During the meeting, the negative effects of the government shutdown on the aviation sector were discussed. Vance expressed concerns that this situation could lead to further delays and stress within the aviation system.

Vance stated, "I am concerned for the workers who check luggage and ensure we get through security. They are worried about how they will support their families because they are not receiving their paychecks. Pilots and air traffic controllers who have not been paid for a long time are also in the same situation."

Opening the Government is Essential

Vance emphasized that reopening the government is a priority for all of America: "End this madness and open the government," he urged, seeking support from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers.

Referring to the required voting process for the government to reopen, Vance noted that a total of 55 lawmakers (52 Republicans, 3 Democrats) voted in favor of reopening the government, but stated that 60 votes are needed.

The Importance of Safety in Air Travel

Vance pointed out that the shutdown should not cause Americans to worry about air travel: "The world's safest aviation sector operates thanks to great airline professionals. However, they are under incredible stress," he indicated, highlighting the potential for a crisis situation.

Vance warned that if the government is not reopened before the increasing air traffic during the Thanksgiving holiday, it could be a "disaster": "We must reopen the government so people can go home for Thanksgiving and conduct business travel."

Government Closed Since October 1

In the U.S., the federal government has been closed since October 1 due to budget disputes between Republicans and Democrats. Congress was unable to approve a temporary budget bill before the new fiscal year began, leading to the suspension of some services.

According to American law, if Congress cannot approve a budget for the fiscal year, the gap must be filled with temporary budgets. In situations where a temporary budget is also not approved, all federal activities, except essential services, are suspended, and many public employees are placed on unpaid leave.
