Japan's exports reversed a four-month decline in September, showing an annual increase of 4.2 percent. Although this positive development fell short of economists' expectations of 4.6 percent, it is seen as a clear signal of recovery in the markets.
Shipments to Asia recorded an increase of 9.2 percent compared to the same period last year, playing a significant role in Japan's trade balance. Exports to China, Japan's largest trading partner, rose by 5.8 percent. However, exports to the second-largest trading partner, the United States, experienced a decline of 13.3 percent.
The main driving force behind the growth in Japan's total exports in September was semiconductor exports, which recorded an increase of 12.6 percent. This situation enhances Japan's competitiveness in technology products and digital transformation.
Japan's exports had been trending downward recently due to customs tariffs imposed by the United States. Automobile exports were the most affected category; in September, the value of automobile exports to the U.S. decreased by 24.2 percent. This decline was milder compared to the 28.4 percent drop in August.
On the other hand, Japan's imports also increased by 3.3 percent on an annual basis. This is seen as a sign of recovery following a 5.2 percent drop in August.
