The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), which oversees data protection in the UK, has announced the initiation of an important investigation concerning the AI-powered chatbot Grok. This review, encompassing X Internet Unlimited Company (XIUC) and X.AI LLC (X.AI), focuses on Grok's processing of personal data and its potential to produce harmful sexual content.
In its announcement, the ICO stated, "We have received reports that Grok creates sexualized images without individuals' consent. The dissemination of such content poses a serious threat under UK data protection laws and risks public health." The examination will carefully assess whether the AI system has implemented the necessary security measures mandated by law.
William Malcolm, ICO's Director of Regulatory Risk and Innovation, said, "Reports regarding Grok raise serious questions about the unauthorized use of personal data. This situation poses a significant threat, particularly for children. The investigation will evaluate XIUC and X.AI's compliance with data protection laws and necessary measures will be taken."
Ofcom, the UK's media regulation and oversight body, has announced that it will conduct its own investigation into the matter. Strict measures against the sexual materials produced by Grok have begun to be implemented worldwide.
