Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) is preparing to pay a total of 573 million dollars (approximately 666 million dollars) in compensation to two local price comparison websites, in accordance with the decisions of a Berlin court. This ruling is directly related to the ongoing antitrust proceedings of the European Union.
The court ruled that Google harmed local competitors for years by prioritizing its own shopping results in search results. One of the prominent local players, Idealo, operated by Axel Springer, received a large portion of the award: 374 million dollars plus 91 million dollars in interest. Although it is below the initial 3.3 billion dollar claim, it is still seen as a significant gain.
A smaller competitor, Producto GmbH, received 89.7 million dollars plus 17.7 million dollars in interest. Google expressed satisfaction with the court's rejection of most claims, but stated that it disagrees with the general rulings and will appeal.
These lawsuits are part of a series of follow-up cases triggered after the European Union fined Google 2.4 billion dollars in 2017 for abusing its dominance in search. Nevertheless, Idealo has indicated that it will not settle for the compensation it won and intends to appeal for a larger amount.
