Ethereum has announced that the ERC-8004 proposal, which creates a standard for untrusted artificial intelligence agents on its network, will soon be launched on the mainnet. This update aims to enhance interaction between various organizations and systems on the Ethereum platform, enabling artificial intelligence agents to act as full economic participants.
The primary goal of this proposal, introduced in August 2025, is to create an unauthorized and decentralized economy by enabling artificial intelligence services to interact securely with each other. In a post on X, Ethereum stated, "ERC-8004 enables the discovery and portable reputation feature, allowing the interaction of artificial intelligence agents between organizations. This opens the doors to a global market where artificial intelligence services can interact without a guardian."
The proposal mentions that artificial intelligence agent trust models are categorized according to risk levels. This allows agents to perform tasks across a wide spectrum, from low-risk assignments to high-risk situations. For example, the range includes simple operations like ordering a pizza to complex scenarios like medical diagnosis.
Davide Crapis, Ethereum Foundation's AI lead, stated that Ethereum's goal of being the platform that regulates artificial intelligence is "in a unique position." Crapis also emphasized that Ethereum's mission is to unite the artificial intelligence community with a decentralized infrastructure.
While Ethereum's official accounts have not shared a specific launch date, Marco De Rossi, the head of AI at MetaMask and one of the proposal's co-authors, indicated that the mainnet launch will "likely occur on Thursday."
