Located in southern Africa, Eswatini has received $5.1 million from the U.S. government in exchange for accepting migrants. This agreement was made under the "third country agreements" implemented by the U.S. and was announced in parliament by Eswatini's Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg.
Minister Rijkenberg stated that the government is diligently evaluating the processes and transparency of the agreement. According to the details of the agreement, a total of 160 migrants are planned to be accepted. So far, at least 15 individuals deported from the U.S. have been accepted into Eswatini.
These migrants are being held in isolation from other inmates at the high-security Matsabha Prison in the capital Mbabane. In the future, there are plans to repatriate these individuals to their home countries. This practice has been criticized by migrant rights advocates, who claim that the safety of asylum seekers is at risk and that countries with poor human rights records are being favored.
Eswatini is not only receiving $5.1 million in financial support, but it also shows that such agreements have been implemented in the past in countries like Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda. U.S. immigration policies have significant effects on countries in Africa and Latin America.
