Education Expenditures Broke Records in 2024

In Turkey, education expenditures increased by approximately 95% in 2024 compared to the previous year. According to the report 'Education Expenditures Statistics, 2024' published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), total education expenditures reached 2 trillion 200 billion 338 million TL.

Increase by Education Levels

The largest increases in education expenditures in 2024 were recorded at the levels of primary and secondary education, with a rise of 99%. It was observed that out of every 100 Turkish Lira spent on education, 18 Liras were spent on the private sector, while it was determined that 17.72% of total education expenditures were made by private institutions.

Increasing Share in GDP

The share of education expenditures in gross domestic product (GDP) rose from 4.2% in 2023 to 4.9% in 2024. However, it was noted that this figure fell short of the 5.8% share of education in 2019.

Highest Expenditure in Higher Education

Of the total state education expenditures, 33.4% was spent on higher education and 21.3% on secondary education. Among the expenditures made by private educational institutions, 42.2% was allocated to higher education, while 32% was designated for secondary education.

Expenditure Per Student Doubled

In 2023, the education expenditure per student was 49,045 TL, while this figure reached 100,307 TL in 2024. The expenditure per student at the higher education level was determined to be 165,467 TL. In dollar terms, it increased by 48.1% to become 3,053 dollars.

More Expenditure in Secondary Education

The total education expenditure per student increased by 104.5% in 2024 compared to the previous year, while the highest increase was observed in secondary education at 122.4% and in middle school at 105.2%.
