With the recently taken decisions, changes have been made to the special consumption tax (ÖTV) rates applied to mobile phones in Turkey. This regulation closely affects both mobile phone buyers and industry representatives.

With the presidential decree that came into effect, the ÖTV assessment for mobile phones has been classified. Accordingly, the ÖTV rate has been set at 25% for mobile phones priced at 4,500 lira and below, while this rate will be 40% for devices priced between 4,500 and 9,000 lira. Phones priced above 9,000 lira will be subject to a 50% tax.

In the previous regulation, these rates were set at 25% for devices priced at 1,500 lira and below, 40% for those between 1,500 and 3,000 lira, and 50% for devices priced above 3,000 lira. With these changes, it becomes possible to reach mobile phones at lower prices. Users, who actually expect prices to decrease due to economic reasons, are closely following the effects of the new regulation.

According to statements from the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the regulation aims not only at buyers but also local manufacturers. This tax regulation, aimed at supporting local production, is expected to reflect as a reduction in mobile phone prices. Thus, it will be possible to obtain mobile phones at more affordable prices with local resources, reducing dependence on manufacturers in the Far East.

Experts emphasize that this new regulation will increase competition in the mobile phone market and pave the way for consumers to access new technological products at more affordable prices. These significant steps are expected to positively influence the IT sector in Turkey and ease consumers' budgets as well. Especially, the younger generation and technology enthusiasts are anticipated to benefit positively from this change.
