The spokesperson for the United Nations (UN), Stephane Dujarric, emphasized the need to maintain communication with the Member States. Ongoing discussions between UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the US Permanent Representative to the UN, Mike Waltz, focus on the payment of the US's debts to the UN.
Dujarric reported that the UN's unit responsible for financial matters has been in contact with US officials, stating, "We are eager to see when and what amounts will be paid."
The total amount of the US's debt to the UN is approximately 4 billion dollars; of this, about 2.2 billion dollars is for the regular budget, and 1.8 billion dollars is intended for peacekeeping operations. The US Permanent Mission to the UN announced that the administration of President Donald Trump plans to make an advance payment for some of the debts in the coming weeks, but the final amount has yet to be determined.
Last week, Guterres warned in a letter sent to member states that if sufficient payments are not made, the cash in the UN's regular budget could be exhausted by July. This situation raised concerns as it could jeopardize the financial structure of the UN.
