EU Council President Antonio Costa emphasized that this special summit, scheduled for January 22 at 19:00, is crucial for the future of transatlantic relations.
Trump defended his need for Greenland on the grounds of "national security", stating that it is vital for the infrastructure of the Dome of Gold project. Following a meeting in Washington among the foreign ministers of the US, Denmark, and Greenland, it was reported that fundamental disagreements persist. It was stated that the US's desire to take over Greenland is clear.
Denmark called for increased military cooperation in Greenland. European countries announced that they would send small military units and officers to Greenland as part of this initiative. This move was noted to be made to maintain the strategic balance in the region.
As a result of the discussions regarding Greenland, Trump announced that he would impose customs duties on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland. It was stated that a 10% customs duty would be applied starting from February 1, 2026, and 25% after June 1, 2026 for these 8 European countries. Trump indicated that the duties would continue until the sale of Greenland occurs.
