A critical session was held in the European Parliament (EP) to discuss two separate motions of no confidence against Ursula von der Leyen. Concerns about the future of the EU and international trade relations were brought to the table during that meeting.
Jordan Bardella, speaking on behalf of the far-right Patriots for Europe, criticized von der Leyen. Bardella stated, "For years, under your presidency, the EU is rapidly moving towards fantastic uncertainty." He claimed that trade agreements with SOUTH AMERICA and the USA threaten European farmers, saying, "While other great powers fight to protect their interests, the EU is unable to take steps in this direction."
Manon Aubry, speaking on behalf of the left group, accused von der Leyen of being "complicit in the genocide in Gaza." She emphasized the ongoing trade with Israel despite the EU's sanctions against Russia, stating, "We must continue to fight for justice and equality." Aubry harshly criticized, "While you are destroying our agriculture, you are serving environmentally unfriendly policies."
In her speech during the session, von der Leyen highlighted that Europe is facing threats, saying, "We need to unite; our rivals are inciting divisions from within." She also pointed out Russian airspace violations, claiming that this aims to pit Europeans against each other. The Parliament will vote on the motion of no confidence on October 9.
In the previous vote of no confidence held in July, 360 members of parliament opposed the motion. If this no-confidence motion passes, von der Leyen and her commission will have to resign. However, the current parliamentary system shows that the acceptance of the proposed changes is unlikely.
