Business confidence in Germany reached its highest level since the beginning of the fourth quarter in 2022. According to IFO Institute data, the business climate index increased from 87.7 in September to 88.0, and it was noteworthy that this value met expectations.

Expectation and Current Situation Indices

The expectation index also realized at 91.6 against an expectation of 90. However, the current situation index showed a decrease from 85.7 to 85.3.

Economic Outlook and Company Expectations

IFO President Clemens Fuest stated, "Companies continue to be hopeful that the economy will recover next year. However, the current business situation is assessed as somewhat worse," evaluating the situation.

Increase in Private Sector Activities

Reports published on Friday revealed that private sector activities in Germany unexpectedly reached their highest level since 2023 in October.

Sectoral Challenges and Expectations

In Germany, although the manufacturing sector continues to face difficulties due to structural issues and high tariffs from the U.S., a more pronounced recovery is anticipated due to public infrastructure and defense spending, along with the recent interest rate cuts from the European Central Bank. Policymakers have reduced borrowing costs eight times during this period and have continued to keep them stable since June. The same policy is expected to continue on Thursday.

Need for Reform

Bundesbank and leading research institutions emphasized that Chancellor Friedrich Merz's coalition needs to undertake fundamental reforms to strengthen the economy and enhance long-term growth prospects. Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel stated, "The government must take decisive steps to revive productivity and promote growth."
