Airbus has increased its orders for the new A350 cargo aircraft at the Dubai Air Show this week by adding five new positions.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Silk Way West Airlines, based in Azerbaijan, committed to purchasing two A350 freighters, thus doubling its order to a total of four aircraft. Additionally, Etihad Airways has also agreed to purchase three more A350 freighters, bringing its total order count to 10 aircraft.
Last November, FreightWaves reported that Etihad Airways was planning to buy three more aircraft for its cargo division. These purchases are noted to support the modernization and expansion of both carriers' fleets.
Earlier this month, Air China reached an agreement to acquire six A350Fs. Airbus has received a total of 85 orders from 13 customers. Meanwhile, Boeing has received more than 50 orders for its next-generation 777-8 freighters.
Airbus highlights the extra-large main deck cargo door and a lighter aircraft structure made from composite materials as selling points compared to Boeing products. Currently, Airbus is assembling the test aircraft at its facility in Toulouse, France, with commercial deliveries expected to start by the end of 2027.
The A350F can carry a payload of 111 metric tons and has a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, this aircraft is reported to have the capacity to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 40% compared to previous-generation aircraft with similar payload and range capabilities.
