US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that in order to alleviate pressure on air traffic controllers due to the government shutdown, flight capacity will be reduced by 10 percent at 40 airports.
Duffy stated that new measures will be taken to enhance aviation security following an incident in Kentucky where a cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff. He emphasized that the incident was not related to air traffic control but stemmed from a mechanical failure.
Secretary Duffy noted that due to the government shutdown, most air traffic controllers have been deprived of their salaries. He indicated that only a partial payment was made to controllers at the beginning of October, leading many of them to take on additional work due to financial difficulties.
Duffy announced that the new measures may lead to more flight delays and cancellations. As a result, staffing shortages in airspaces are expected.
Duffy stated, "Ensuring safe travel is our highest priority. Therefore, we will implement additional measures to reduce the risk profile in the national airspace."
This new regulation will be implemented starting Friday morning.
