The US Department of Labor unexpectedly shared important data regarding a rise in unemployment benefit claims during the federal government shutdown process.
As of the week ending October 18, the number of individuals filing for unemployment benefits for the first time reached 232,000. This figure marks an increase from the 219,000 claims recorded for the week ending September 20.
The number of individuals continuing to claim unemployment benefits also saw a rise, reaching 1 million 957 thousand. The previous week's count stood at 1 million 947 thousand.
The 43-day government shutdown, which ended on November 12, negatively affected the release of economic data, creating uncertainty. During this period, the increase in unemployment figures is considered an important indicator in the economic recovery process.
