The United States has lifted sanctions on the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), which is Kazakhstan's main oil export route. This development is seen as a significant step that will positively affect Kazakhstan's access to global oil markets.
Reports from Kazakh media are based on statements made by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Previously blocked transactions have now been released. The new licenses cover only operations related to CPC, Tengiz, and Karachaganak oil fields.
The obtained license also grants permission to Russian companies listed under US sanctions, such as Lukoil and Rosneft, to engage in CPC projects related to the Karachaganak and Tengiz fields. This could open the door to a new cooperation process in the region.
The CPC line facilitates the transportation of oil extracted from Kazakhstan's important oil fields, such as Tengiz and Karachaganak, to global markets via the Novorossiysk Port on Russia's Black Sea coast. However, sanctions and operational disruptions following the Russia-Ukraine war had prompted Kazakhstan to seek alternative export routes.
