According to Harvard University's third-quarter report, the IBIT ETF has now become the university's largest single investment. This development highlights the new level of institutional interest, and Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas emphasizes that Harvard's move is one of the strongest endorsements in the sector.

Considering that large endowments like Harvard and Yale typically do not engage in ETF purchases, the preference for IBIT can be seen as an exceptionally unusual move. With a total position worth approximately $500 million, Harvard University has become the 16th largest institutional investor in IBIT. As of September 30, Harvard held 6,813,612 shares of IBIT, bringing the total value of these shares to $443 million.

The university's investment portfolio also shows a position of 661,391 shares in GLD (gold ETF), valued at approximately $235 million. Both positions have experienced significant increases. Harvard’s IBIT holdings grew by 257%, reaching more than three times the 1,906,000 share level at the end of June. On the gold side, the GLD position increased by 99%, nearly doubling from 333,000 shares.

According to Balchunas, these moves are regarded as significant but quiet indicators of institutional Bitcoin adoption. The choice of a Bitcoin ETF by an institution known for its conservative investment policies, like Harvard University, boosts confidence in both IBIT and the overall spot Bitcoin ETF market. These developments are among the points that investors should watch closely.
