Proposal to Delay the Artificial Intelligence Act

The European Commission has announced a new omnibus legislative proposal that includes simplifications of some digital rules. This proposal emphasizes that the more effective implementation of the Artificial Intelligence Act will have positive impacts on social security and fundamental rights.

Need for Guidance on High-Risk Systems

According to statements, it was noted that necessary guidance and support mechanisms need to be established for the rules concerning high-risk artificial intelligence systems under the Artificial Intelligence Act. The European Commission expressed that the start of the implementation of these rules depends on the availability of appropriate support tools.

Implementation Date and Approval Process

Within the framework of the law, it is proposed to extend the transition period for the rules related to high-risk artificial intelligence systems by up to 16 months. The entry into force of this proposal will require the approval of member countries and the European Parliament.

Past Dates and Obligations

The EU Artificial Intelligence Act was expected to come into force on August 1, 2024. However, the start date for obligations related to high-risk artificial intelligence systems will be postponed to August 2026. This will also affect the gradual implementation process of the rules regarding the use of artificial intelligence.
