Proposal to Delay the Artificial Intelligence Law

The European Commission has announced a new omnibus bill that includes simplifications of some digital rules. This proposal emphasizes that the effective implementation of the Artificial Intelligence Law will have positive effects on social security and fundamental rights.

Need for Guidance on High-Risk Systems

According to the statements, it has been stated that necessary guidance and support mechanisms need to be established for the implementation of the rules regarding high-risk artificial intelligence systems in the Artificial Intelligence Law. The European Commission stated that the commencement of the implementation of these rules depends on the availability of appropriate support tools.

Implementation Date and Approval Process

Within the framework of the law, it is proposed to extend the transition period for the rules related to high-risk artificial intelligence systems by up to 16 months. Approval from member states and the European Parliament will be required for this proposal to come into effect.

Past Dates and Obligations

The EU Artificial Intelligence Law was expected to come into effect on August 1, 2024. However, the start date for the obligations related to high-risk artificial intelligence systems will be postponed to August 2026. This will also impact the phased implementation of rules regarding the use of artificial intelligence.
