The European Union (EU) has updated its visa rules for Russian citizens due to increasing security concerns arising from the war in Ukraine. According to the statements made, Russian citizens will no longer be able to obtain multiple-entry Schengen visas and will have to apply for a new visa for each journey to Europe.
The EU stated that these measures aim to protect public order and security. However, it was noted that some exceptions would apply for independent journalists and human rights defenders.
The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, shared on social media, "It is not a justified rationale to start a war and expect to move freely in Europe. The EU is tightening visa rules for Russian citizens due to ongoing drone incidents and sabotage in European territory. Traveling to the EU is a privilege, not a right," she stated.
