Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has decided to significantly reduce the resources allocated to the metaverse project, once viewed as the future of the company. This change means cuts to the funding necessary for building virtual worlds.
According to some sources, Meta executives are considering budget cuts of up to 30% within the metaverse group. These cuts also include the Meta Horizon Worlds and Quest virtual reality units. Although no definitive decision has been made, cuts of this magnitude could result in potential layoffs.
Meta has confirmed the reduction of resources allocated to the metaverse and stated that these savings will be redirected to Reality Labs’ artificial intelligence glasses and other wearable devices. A company spokesperson emphasized that there are no broader plans, stating, "We are not making changes across our Reality Labs portfolio."
Despite Zuckerberg's belief in the future of the virtual world, the failures of the projects are being questioned by some analysts. Investors argue that Reality Labs products are far from profitable, suggesting that these resources should be redirected to more efficient areas. For instance, experts like Mike Proulx predict that Meta may abandon its metaverse projects by the end of this year.
