As the cryptocurrency market enters the new year, security concerns are on the rise. Onchain researcher ZachXBT is warning investors with his statements. Hundreds of wallets across various EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) chains are being systematically targeted, and attacks are continuing rapidly.
According to information shared by ZachXBT on his Telegram channel, attackers are targeting many wallets with small amounts. While most victims have experienced losses of less than two thousand dollars, this strategy is causing the total loss to increase quickly. So far, approximately $107,000 has been withdrawn from the wallets. However, given that the attack is ongoing, there is a warning that this figure may increase.
The initial entry point of the attack has not yet been identified, keeping the risk that other wallets may also contain similar vulnerabilities in the spotlight. ZachXBT also shared a crypto address he believes is linked to suspicious activities with the public: 0xAc2e5153170278e24667a580baEa056ad8Bf9bFB. Experts, combining this situation with other recent security breaches, emphasize that the crypto ecosystem needs to be more vigilant.
According to data from blockchain security company PeckShield, approximately 26 major crypto exploits occurred in December, with total losses reaching around $76 million. This figure represents a roughly 60% decrease compared to the $194.27 million loss in November. However, this decrease does not mean that security vulnerabilities can be overlooked.
One of the notable incidents in December occurred with Trust Wallet. During the New Year holiday, a version of the browser extension was exposed to a significant security vulnerability, leading to a loss of approximately $7 million. Trust Wallet CEO Eowyn Chen stated that the temporary access issues on the Chrome Web Store were platform-related and announced that a compensation process had been initiated for affected users.
According to experts, these recent incidents once again highlight the need for users to be more cautious about wallet security and the versions of applications they use.
