As the new year approaches in the cryptocurrency market, security concerns are on the rise. Onchain researcher ZachXBT is warning investors with his statements. Hundreds of wallets on different EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) chains are being systematically targeted, and attacks are continuing rapidly.
According to information shared by ZachXBT on his Telegram channel, attackers are targeting many wallets with small amounts. Although most victims have experienced losses of less than two thousand dollars, this strategy is causing the total loss to increase rapidly. So far, approximately 107,000 dollars has been withdrawn from wallets. However, considering that the attack is ongoing, warnings are made that this figure may increase.
The initial entry point of the attack has not yet been identified, which keeps the risk that other wallets may have similar vulnerabilities in the agenda. ZachXBT also shared a cryptocurrency address he believes to be linked to suspicious activities with the public: 0xAc2e5153170278e24667a580baEa056ad8Bf9bFB. Experts, combining this situation with other recent security breaches, emphasize that the crypto ecosystem needs to be more cautious.
According to data from blockchain security company PeckShield, approximately 26 major crypto exploits occurred in December, and the total damage caused by these incidents reached 76 million dollars. This figure indicates about a 60% decrease compared to the 194.27 million dollar loss in November. However, this decrease does not mean that security vulnerabilities can be ignored.
One of the notable incidents in December occurred on the Trust Wallet front. During the New Year's holiday, a version of the browser extension was exposed to a significant security vulnerability, leading to a loss of approximately 7 million dollars. Trust Wallet CEO Eowyn Chen stated that the temporary access issue experienced on the Chrome Web Store was due to the platform and announced that a compensation process for affected users had been initiated.
Experts say that these recent incidents reiterate the need for users to be more careful about their wallet security and the versions of the applications they are using.
