The new year begins with a noticeable increase in electricity bills for consumers. This increase, which will manifest as 150%, particularly affects households with usage exceeding 4,000 kilowatts. The cancellation of discounts previously provided by the government will become a significant burden for users.
The President of the Consumers Union, Mahmut Şahin, evaluated this situation as a 'hidden price increase.' The situation, which can be assessed within the same framework as indirect price increases in product prices, will be reflected in electricity bills. Şahin clearly stated the situation by saying, "When we raise the price of a product from 100 TL to 130 TL, we are indeed increasing the price. We are facing the same situation with electricity."
During the past few years, the policy of providing discounts based on kilowatt thresholds in electricity pricing had relieved the budgets of households. However, starting this year, the 150% increase will begin to create a burden even for regular bills. For example, a consumer who pays a 653 TL bill previously paid 286 TL for a state-subsidized bill at 200 kilowatts usage. It is inevitable that this situation will lead to significant cost increases for thousands of families.
The changes made by the government not only lead to an increase in the electricity costs consumers have to pay but can also cause significant difficulties during the winter months, when energy needs increase. Consumers will have to plan their usage more carefully and focus on electricity conservation.
As Mahmut Şahin pointed out, the statement that 'it is not an increase but the cancellation of a discount' helps us better understand this situation. The changes in electricity bills will create a significant burden, especially on low and middle-income households, and as a result, will seriously threaten their overall budgets.
