The leading Democratic member of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Mark Warner, stated that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence could raise the unemployment rate for new university graduates to 25% within the next 2-3 years.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Warner warned that many young people entering university with significant debt facing joblessness could lead to widespread economic dissatisfaction and "unprecedented social turmoil."
The senator expressed that this situation could become the biggest problem for the U.S. by 2028, emphasizing how they would manage it at that time. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate among university graduates aged 20-24 reached 9.3% in August; this rate was 7.4% two years ago.
Warner noted his plans to prepare a large-scale retraining program, stating that 70% to 80% of the costs should be covered by large artificial intelligence companies that cause disruptions in the economy. "Let's decide together how this retraining should be," Warner said, suggesting that the program should be implemented over a five-year period.
