World Meteorological Organization Issues Danger Warning

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced that millions of people are experiencing a lack of protection against increasingly dangerous weather conditions. These weather events continue to cause damage to both economic assets and vital infrastructure.

WMO Extraordinary Session and 'Early Warnings for All' Initiative

The Extraordinary Session held in Geneva aims to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the WMO and to take life-saving measures against dangerous weather events. A report concerning the scope of the 'Early Warnings for All' initiative noted that the number of countries with early warning services has doubled in the last decade, but significant gaps remain.

Security Vulnerabilities and Necessary Measures

According to assessments made in the report, millions of people continue to be exposed to dangerous weather events. In various countries, early warning systems remain limited in reducing disaster-related deaths. It is stated that the death rate from disasters is six times higher in areas where such systems are lacking.

Statements from the WMO Secretary-General

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo stated, “Early Warnings for All is now more than an initiative; it is a symbol of global solidarity.” She emphasized that over the last 50 years, climate-related events have caused more than 2 million deaths, with 90% of these deaths occurring in developing countries, highlighting the impact of increasing severe weather on economic costs.

Future Steps

Saulo reported that as of 2024, 108 countries will have a certain capacity for multi-hazard early warning systems, which is more than double the 52 countries in 2015. This increase over the years shows that governments and communities in various countries are developing and implementing life-saving programs.

In conclusion, it was noted that during the WMO Extraordinary Session, a new report entitled 'Early Warnings for All in Focus: Hazard Monitoring and Forecasting' will be published.
