European Union (EU) Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made important statements to reporters following the weekly meeting of EU Commission members.
Von der Leyen warned against any US intervention in Greenland, stating, "Greenland belongs to its people. Therefore, decisions regarding Denmark and Greenland are solely theirs to make."
She mentioned that they are in constant communication with the Danish government, saying, "We listen to the needs of the Greenlandic people and are in close contact."
Von der Leyen emphasized that Greenland is part of NATO, using the phrase, "NATO's fundamental principle is collective security."
Recalling that the EU has invested in its relations with Greenland and opened an office in Nuuk last year, von der Leyen added, "We have a continuous communication channel with the Greenlanders. We have increased our interaction over the years and a strong relationship has been established between the EU and the Greenlanders."
Von der Leyen underscored that the EU stands by Greenland, stating, "We respect the wishes and interests of the Greenlandic people. They can work with us with confidence."
Former US President Donald Trump claimed that controlling Greenland was an "absolute necessity" for the country's interests, which garnered reactions from Greenlandic and Danish officials as well as the EU administration.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that they have been intensively addressing Arctic security issues and have discussed steps to ensure regional security with allies.
Located 2,900 kilometers away from Denmark, Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
