UNDP: Urgent $70 Billion Demand for Gaza's Reconstruction

The United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Special Representative in Palestine, Jaco Cilliers, made critical statements at the weekly press conference held at the UN Geneva Office.

Highlighting the extent of the destruction in Gaza, Cilliers emphasized the impressive resilience and determination of Gazans. "The determination of Gazans to rebuild the Gaza Strip is very high," he said.

The Importance of Ceasefire

Cilliers stated that as the UNDP, all parties must respect the ceasefire agreement reached, and this is vital for the long-term stability of Gaza.

Moreover, he announced that they have so far removed 81,000 tons of rubble, which is equivalent to approximately 3,100 truckloads. The debris removal efforts aim to ensure access for humanitarian actors to the region.

Funding Needed for Reconstruction

Jaco Cilliers expressed that according to the Joint Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment conducted by the UN, the European Union (EU), and the World Bank, a total of $70 billion is needed for Gaza's reconstruction. He emphasized that this amount is expected to be around $20 billion over the next three years.

Cilliers remarked, "The private sector can also play an important role in providing about 50% of the financing." It was noted that the amount of rubble to be removed in Gaza is approximately 55 million tons.

UNDP's Role and Future Hopes

Stating that the UNDP is continuously active in Gaza and continues work in humanitarian aid, early recovery, and development projects, Cilliers said, "We have a long way to go, but with the support of the UN and other international partners, we believe that these efforts will begin as soon as possible."
