European football's governing body UEFA is reconsidering the broadcast bidding process for its most prestigious tournament, the Champions League, in a bid to increase interest from digital streaming platforms such as Amazon and Netflix.
Bloomberg sources told Bloomberg that in future, broadcasters and digital platforms will be able to bid for multiple markets at the same time. Previously, it was difficult to create collective bids as major markets were put out to tender at different times depending on existing contracts.
The Champions League is UEFA's most valuable annual event, generating billions of dollars in revenue each season. However, media rights are currently fragmented, with around 100 different broadcasters holding various packages.
UEFA is considering the possibility of longer-term contracts. Under pressure from the European Commission, the organization reduced contracts to three years two decades ago to encourage competition. The revamped process will allow a single broadcaster to broadcast a match worldwide for the first time.
UEFA is expected to launch a tender process for 2027 and beyond in the coming weeks. The tenders will be evaluated not only on financial size, but also on reach and promotional support.
The successful outcome of UEFA's deal with the US makes long-term contracts more attractive for the organization. Indeed, in 2022, Paramount signed a deal worth $1.5 billion for the US broadcast rights to the Champions League, valid until 2030.
Currently, UEFA's five largest European markets include both traditional broadcasters and digital platforms. According to UEFA's website, there are no broadcasters in France and Spain, with matches broadcast via Canal+ and Telefonica SA respectively.
In 2022, Amazon signed a three-year deal with UEFA for the rights to broadcast some Champions League matches in England, which will expire in 2027.
UEFA's men's club competitions - the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League and Super Cup - are expected to generate revenues of at least 4.4 billion euros each year until 2027.
