Turkey increased its natural gas imports, made to meet its natural gas needs, by 8.5 percent in July compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 3 billion 912 million 890 thousand cubic meters. This increase highlights the effectiveness of the country's strategies to ensure energy supply security.
According to the Natural Gas Market Sector Report published by the Energy Market Regulatory Authority, 3 billion 633 million 760 thousand cubic meters of the total natural gas imports were realized via pipelines, while 279 million 130 thousand cubic meters were supplied through liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities. The large proportion of imports made via pipelines revealed Turkey's significant reliance on pipelines for its energy supply.
Russia, in particular, continues to stand out as Turkey's largest natural gas supplier. Russia, playing a critical role in meeting the country's energy needs, has become one of the most important players in Turkey's energy market. This situation also raises hopes for the development of energy collaborations and the strengthening of energy infrastructure.
The increase in Turkey's natural gas imports reduces concerns with the anticipation of rising energy demand as winter approaches. The increase in imports is considered a strategic step to ensure the country's energy security by maintaining domestic consumption balances. Furthermore, this situation could indirectly affect the stability of energy prices.
In conclusion, Turkey's 8.5% increase in natural gas imports parallels developments in the energy sector and changes in supply chains. The role of prominent suppliers, especially Russia, in the Turkish energy market will remain critically important for future periods.
