Representatives of tradesmen and the retail sector in Turkey sparked discussions following news that a workshop organized by the Turkey Retailers Federation (TPF) reached a consensus on closing chain markets on Sundays.
The Turkey Shopping Centers and Retailers Federation (TAMPF) stated that reports regarding the closure of markets on Sundays were unfounded. This statement was also supported by the Food Retailers Association (GDP).
The GDP stated in its announcement that it represents 47 thousand sales points and 465 thousand employees engaged in food retail in our country, emphasizing that there is no consensus on the closure of markets on Sundays. The association stressed that the current situation would negatively impact employment.
In its announcement, GDP expressed that the suggestion to close one day a week would lead to a 14% loss in employment in the sector, and this situation would also harm the supply chain. The statement noted that "restrictions on working days would cause significant problems in the economy."
The association warned that restricting shopping days would lead to consumer distress, emphasizing that this situation would affect individuals with lower purchasing power more adversely.
In conclusion, the importance of providing the opportunity to serve every day of the week in the digitalizing shopping world has been highlighted once again.
