Turkey's Renewable Energy Potential

Ben Backwell, CEO of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), stated that Turkey could become a significant global supply chain element in renewable energy if it reaches sufficient scale.

During his statements made at the 16th General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Backwell emphasized that Turkey has strong potential in wind and solar energy.

Backwell expressed that Turkey is establishing its own wind energy supply chain, which has helped the country achieve an important position in the energy market in terms of industry.

Close Cooperation with Turkey

He noted that the current production capacity mainly caters to regional markets, while also pointing out that Turkey has a developed industrial infrastructure and strong companies.

This potential is closely monitored by international circles. Turkey will host the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the UNITED NATIONS FRAMEWORK CONVENTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE, which will increase Turkey's global weight in many sectors.

Backwell emphasized that COP31 presents a significant promotional opportunity for Turkey and Turkish companies, while evaluating Turkey as a natural bridge between Europe, the Middle East, and other regions.

Assessments on the COP31 Process

Backwell announced that good cooperation is being carried out with Australia during the preparations for COP31 and noted that the COP meeting in Brazil was challenging. The inability to reach an agreement on texts related to fossil fuels has made this summit contentious.

Emphasizing the importance of addressing critical issues, Backwell stated that a clear roadmap should be created regarding how and how quickly to phase out fossil fuels. He mentioned that it would not be easy to bring different views together during the COP31 process, but the dialogue needs to be maintained.
