Turkey and the USA's Energy Partnership Deepens!

Commodities News
Turkey and the USA's new energy agreements are strengthening strategic relations between the two countries. The proximity in LNG and nuclear energy fields will provide economic and employment opportunities.

Turkey-US Energy Relations Strengthen

New agreements on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and nuclear energy signed between Turkey and the US have the potential to deepen the strategic energy partnership between the two countries. This process reinforces Turkey's goal of becoming a regional energy hub while also increasing employment opportunities in the US.

Innovation in Nuclear Energy

The Strategic Civil Nuclear Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding signed last month predicts the development of civil cooperation in nuclear energy between Turkey and the US. In this context, the aim is to strengthen regulatory and technological collaboration between the two countries. Experts view this step as a strategic move for Turkey to reduce its dependence on unstable suppliers in its energy mix.

Supply Security with American LNG

A long-term agreement signed between BOTAŞ and a US LNG exporter will allow Turkey to procure approximately 4 billion cubic meters of US LNG annually starting in 2026. Brigham McCown states that this new LNG agreement has a "win-win" nature in terms of supply security and reducing costs. The agreement is expected to provide stability in Turkey's natural gas supply while allowing for a reduction in consumer bills.

Employment and Economic Gains

McCown emphasized that this strategic cooperation would develop the US nuclear export market and create new employment opportunities. The LNG to be shipped from the US Gulf Coast terminals will be processed at regasification facilities in Turkey. Although the volume of this LNG agreement will only meet less than 10% of Turkey's gas demand, it will help diversify fluctuating supply sources and stabilize gas prices.

The Goals of Both Countries

All these developments will also contribute to reaching the 100 billion dollar bilateral trade target between Turkey and the US. The activation of US reactors in the field of nuclear energy will increase the stability of electricity supply in Turkey and ultimately reduce consumer costs.
