McAfee's recent research sheds light on how fraudsters impersonate trustworthy brands and how consumers can protect themselves from these dangers. During this fast-paced shopping period, fraudsters target consumers with fake websites and misleading advertisements.
Technology brands are at the top of the list. Popular brands like Apple, Nintendo, Samsung, Disney, and Steam are among the most frequently impersonated brands. Apple stands out as the brand with the most fake URLs. Nintendo is highlighted for its demand with the upcoming Switch 2 in the 2025 holiday season.
Luxury brands are also attracting the attention of fraudsters. Fake user experiences for brands like Coach, Dior, Gucci, Rolex, and Ralph Lauren have increased by 45%. Fraudsters create fake stores by copying these brands' promotional language and graphics.
Fraud rates have begun to rise ahead of the holiday season. 91% of Americans report seeing advertisements from unfamiliar retailers, which increases the risk of exposure to fraudulent URLs and fake sites. These risks have notably increased by 10% from the beginning of October to the beginning of November.
McAfee offers several important tips on how consumers can take precautions against fraud this holiday season. First, it is advised to think before clicking on links, choose reputable retailers, and use AI-powered fraud protection. Additionally, enabling two-factor authentication and shopping only on secure websites also provides protection.
