Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world's leading chipmaker, has announced a revolutionary strategy to improve energy efficiency in chip manufacturing. The company plans to reduce the energy consumption of its AI-enabled processor chips by 90%.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), which manufactures chips for Nvidia, said that current AI servers consume up to 1,200 watts of energy during performance-intensive tasks. This power consumption is roughly equivalent to the usual power consumption of 1,000 American homes. Thus, the new chip designs developed by TSMC will help significantly reduce energy costs.
TSMC said that these energy efficiency gains will be achieved by combining several chiplets (smaller parts of a full chip) made with different technologies. This next-generation chip design is characterized by the ability to combine computational processes even faster and save energy.
