U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his concerns about a possible military operation against Islamist militants in Nigeria, warning the Nigerian government.
On Saturday, in a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump ordered the Pentagon to “prepare for a potential operation.” Emphasizing the critical importance of the situation in Nigeria, Trump threatened to cut off aid to the country immediately.
During a press conference on Sunday, Trump spoke about the Islamist militants they oppose, stating that these groups “kill Christians” and threaten the lives of many innocent people. Trump's comments from Air Force One raised concerns about the possibility of U.S. military intervention. Trump responded, “It’s possible. I foresee many things.”
Trump previously identified Nigeria as a “Country Requiring Special Attention.” Republican Senator Ted Cruz is urging Congress to designate Nigeria as a country that violates religious freedom.
The year 2023 was recorded as a year in which a total of 1 billion dollars in aid was provided to Nigeria under the Joe Biden administration, while this figure is projected to drop to 250 million dollars in the first year of Trump's second term in 2025. This indicates a significant decrease in aid.
During the Trump administration, a 15% tariff on products imported from Nigeria impacted approximately 400 million dollars in trade.
