Former US President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit in a Florida court against BBC regarding allegations of editing in the 'Panorama' documentary that focused on his speech prior to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. In the lawsuit filed in the Southern District of Florida Federal Court, Trump is seeking a total of 10 billion dollars in damages for defamation and violations of Florida's commercial practices laws.
In the 33-page complaint submitted by Trump's legal team, BBC is accused of "misrepresenting, defaming, and misleadingly portraying Trump." The lawsuit states that the documentary distorted Trump's words, making it appear as if President Trump was calling on his supporters to attack the Capitol Building. The complaint includes the statement, "President Trump never said this string of words."
Trump stated in a comment made in the Oval Office that BBC fabricated words that were not his and far from patriotism. He criticized this situation, saying, "They made it seem as if I said words I never said."
Previously, BBC acknowledged the editing error through a statement made by Chairman Samir Shah and apologized to both Trump and the viewers.
In the aftermath of the editing scandal, BBC Director General Tim Davie and News Director Deborah Turness resigned. Davie cited the editing scandal and the renewal process of the broadcasting contract among the reasons for his resignation.
These discussions became public following leaked correspondences published by The Telegraph Gazette. The correspondence included information confirming that the Panorama documentary distorted Trump's speech.
