Federal Judge Amit Mehta made an important decision regarding the cancellation of clean energy grants by the U.S. government. The cancellation of grants worth approximately $7.6 billion was deemed a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution.
Mehta ruled that directing grant recipients to projects in states that did not vote for Trump was illegal. The court stated that there was no justification provided for how the cancellation supported the public interest.
The court's ruling reportedly affected clean energy projects in 16 states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.
Department of Energy spokesperson Ben Dietderich emphasized that officials were evaluating the funds individually and that the standards for justifying the continued spending of taxpayer money were not met.
In this context, the funding of $1.2 billion for a hydrogen center in California was canceled, while a hydrogen project in Texas and another project covering West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania were exempt from the cuts.
